Left-Handed Girl
[Zuo pie zi nv hai], directed by Shih-Ching Tsou, Taiwan/ France/ USA/ UK 2025, 108'
- A hit of this year’s New Horizons Festival, Taiwan’s official Oscar submission, and a new title carrying Sean Baker’s seal of quality: Left-Handed Girl.
- Taipei pulses with nocturnal energy. Three women move to Taiwan’s capital to begin a new chapter in life: Shu-Fen, unlucky in both love and money, and her daughters—the teenage, sharp-tongued I-Ann and the devilishly charming little I-Jing. While the single mother sets up her own noodle stall at the night market, I-Ann, instead of studying, works as a betel nut girl—the local equivalent of a snus seller—and I-Jing sets off on her own (quite literally…) to explore the neon-lit corridors of the market.
- In this city of great opportunities and equally great disappointments, the Taiwanese-American director examines the bonds between women in a family—marked by cracks, yet full of tenderness. The result is an energetic dramedy about how we don’t get to choose our family, but if we could, we might just invite… a meerkat. And what’s the deal with that left hand?
- The film is directed and co-written by Shih-Ching Tsou. Although it is her first feature as a solo director, Tsou debuted more than 20 years ago—alongside none other than Sean Baker, with whom she has long shared both friendship and film sets.
- Sean Baker is also the co-writer of Left-Handed Girl and the film’s lead producer. His distinctive eye and storytelling style are clearly present here—Baker is also solely responsible for the editing!
- The film is Taiwan’s official submission to the Oscars. Its world premiere took place at the Cannes Film Festival, and it continues its festival journey with great success, winning awards along the way. Critics praise its deliberate, finely crafted direction, dynamic dialogue, and the portrayal of family relationships and the world through a child’s eyes—sweet, bitter, and at times darkly comic—drawing comparisons between Left-Handed Girl and The Florida Project.
