Alicja Czyczel (Poland)
Alicja Czyczel is an artist who takes on various roles – choreographer, dancer, performer, researcher, educator, organizer, and facilitator – and works in diverse social environments – public cultural institutions, art schools and academies, non-governmental organizations, and social movements. She places her work and practice at the intersection of disciplines – performing and visual arts – and utilizes tools rooted in dance improvisation, somatics, education, and activism. She creates stage choreographies, site-specific performances, sound installations, concerts, poetic scores, and walks that combine ecological sensitivity, queer feminism, and intersectional perspective. Her walks and artistic explorations most often take place in the surroundings of forests and bodies of water – seas, rivers, wetlands, and ponds. Her art is a practice of being together, listening together, sensing, and celebrating existence in a world full of diverse beings speaking their own languages.
She holds a Master's degree in Choreography (exerce) from ICI-CCN Montpellier and a Master's degree in Cultural Studies (MISH) from the University of Warsaw. She is a graduate of the Experimental Choreography Course at Centrum w Ruchu and the postgraduate program "Collective Practices" at the Royal Institute of Arts in Stockholm. She is the founder of Przestrzeń Wspólna (Common Space), a platform for exchanging experiences and knowledge about choreography and dance. She has created choreographies (LAGMA, Layers), sound installations (Becoming Permeated with the World), and site-specific performances (Snail Trail).
She has appeared in plays and performances by Daniel Kotowski, Ania Nowak, Joanna Piotrowska, and Vincent Dupont. She is the author of "Manifesto for the Ecologization of Independent Choreography and Performing Arts," which was published in Dialog Puzyny.
Her work has been shown in, among others, the following venues: at the Polish Dance Platform, at the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Zachęta - National Gallery of Art, the Narrations Festival in Gdańsk, the Contexts Festival in Sokołowsko, the TVP Television Theatre, the 14th Gwangju Biennale in South Korea, the 3rd Biennale in Thailand, and the Polish Pavilion at the 61st International Art Exhibition in Venice.
