Nénette
directed by Nicolas Philibert, France 2010, 70'
Nénette is a female orangutan that had been living for several decades behind a glass pane in the Botanical Garden of Paris, watched by hundreds of visitors. Philibert's camera looks at her tenderly, but very carefully, undermining and complicating the process of looking at animals and looking at them in general. The film shows that both the cinema and zoo emerge from the same cultural need to expose living objects to the public.
