Renovations at Ujazdowski

The decision to rebuild the Ujazdowski Castle into its current edifice was made in the 1970s. It was built on the basis of earlier plans on historic foundations; however, the area around the Castle was never fully modernized. In order to increase the functionality of the space as well as to create new spaces, we have undertaken a number of refurbishment activities both inside the building as well as in its immediate surroundings.

  • Adaptation of the cellars into an open warehouse of the collection
    • The adaptation of the cellars is based on the design of architect Andrzej Jurkiewicz. Date of completion: 2018.

    • In newly renovated rooms Museum of the Castle and Military Hospital at Ujazdów will be located.
    • The works will include replacement of wiring and low-voltage installations, drying of the foundations, installing new doors and windows, and the making of shelves for display and storage. Moreover, the modernization of the floor, walls, ceilings and lighting. The spaces are situated in the cellars in the northwestern part of the Castle. The total area of the rooms is 263.61 m2.

    • This investment consists of adapting the rooms in the cellars of the Ujazdowski Castle into storage spaces as well as an exhibition of the International Collection of Contemporary Art belonging to Ujazdowski. With the newly opened warehouse, it will be possible to hold educational meetings and discussions inside the cellars.

  • Reconstruction of Gallery 1 on the ground floor
    • Works in Gallery 1 consist of improvements: new ceilings, changed lighting, new floors have been built, ventilation and air conditioning have been instaled.

    • The final decor is arranged by architect Aleksandra Wasilkowska. The first opening in the new Gallery was the opening of the exhibition of Ula Sickle "Free Gestures" on 2 March 2018.

  • Modernization of the cinema at Ujazdowski
    • The renovation of the cinema at Ujazdowski is co-financed by the Polish Film Institute.

    • Responsible for the design and final aesthetic effect is Aleksandra Wasilkowska.

    • After last year's renovation, under which seating and carpeting were replaced, the cinema at Ujazdowski gained a new look. Renovation plans include the replacement of lighting and acoustic ceiling treatment as well as the modernization of the electrical system.

  • Creating a Workspace  a new space for the purposes of a public programme

    • Renovation works were conducted in the room located on the ground floor connected to a tower which, until recently, served as the Museum of the Castle and Military Hospital in Ujazdów. In the rooms, renovation of windows and woodblock floor was performed, new electric installation cables were run, as well as an acoustic ceiling and a new lighting system were installed. The space prepared this way will serve for various forms of activities: meetings, workshops, shows, and talks, to which we invite the public, as well as activities of artists-in-residence or educators. This is the first functional space of this type in the Ujazdowski Castle. Its opening in April 2018 will be inaugurated with a performance by Kem, invited to the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art for a special artistic residency.
