The Ugliest Car
directed by Grzegorz Szczepaniak, Poland 2017, 47'
For Poles, German cars are a symbol of reliability. Bogdan Różycki's 51-year-old Wartburg seems to confirm this opinion. Although he had to reinforce the turn signals with duct tape and uses a string to keep the doors closed, once some worn-out bearings were replaced with ones taken from a tractor, he’ll manage to get a few hundred kilometers more out of the car yet. Bogdan thus packs two sisal bags in the car and takes his 94-year-old mother on a journey so that he can find out more about what happened to his parents—Kazimiera and his late father—during the war. Along the way, they visit Majdanek, Konin, Pyzdry, Bar Avocado, gas stations, car garages and motels before finally reaching the suburbs of Magdeburg and the Junkers factory, where Bogdan's mother was forced to work as a young girl.
