The Deal
directed by Els van Driel and Eefje Blankevoort, Netherlands 2017, 52' (English friendly)
- Two years after the conclusion of the so-called EU-Turkey refugee agreement, thousands of asylum seekers are still awaiting decisions about their fate while living in difficult conditions on the island of Lesbos. The filmmakers speak with asylum seekers, with those who lend them assistance and with those who are seeking a solution to the crisis at the level of European politics. The film’s main protagonist is Gerald Knaus, an Austrian political scientist and architect of the EU-Turkey agreement. His vision is criticized by both the extreme right and human rights organizations. And according to Knaus himself, the agreement should only be an element of a wider plan that will make it possible to simultaneously deal with the crisis while also saving the right to asylum.
