The Chronology of Water

directed by Kristin Stewart, USA/ France 128'
  • Kristen Stewart's directorial debut, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to a standing ovation, marks a significant milestone in her career. Having taken her first steps alongside Jodie Foster in David Fincher's critically acclaimed thriller Panic Room (2002), the actress achieved global stardom as Bella Swan in the Twilight sagafilms that have since become staples of modern pop culture. However, Stewart's subsequent artistic choices have been far more unconventional, venturing well beyond the boundaries of traditional Hollywood.
    • The decision to make her directorial debut by adapting a relatively difficult, narratively complex autobiographical novel is yet another manifestation of her artistic maturity. Her fame did not make the filmmaking process quick or easy; Kristen fought for eight years to bring it to lifefrom writing the screenplay herself to securing financing.
  • The result, The Chronology of Wateran adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch's memoiris a deep dive into extreme experiences. It is a story of a nightmarish childhood, youthful self-destruction, and the salvation the protagonist finds in swimming and writing. At the heart of the film lies the female body; it is through the body that Lidia (played in a magnificent, physical performance by Imogen Poots) experiences joy and pain. She experiments with it, flees from it, trains it, disciplines it, neglects it, and ultimately draws all her strength from it. When we first meet her, she is still a young girl, followed at every turn by her father’s gaze.
    • This impressive, bone-chilling adaptation of Yuknavitch’s memoir brilliantly translates words into images. It shreds unwanted memories, gives rein to fantasy, loses and regains control, and muddies the watersall while moving forward with the determined, steady strokes of a champion swimmer. The story begins like a tsunamia wave that annihilates homes and peoplebut the shape of the water, along with the emotional temperature and rhythm of The Chronology of Water, shifts from chapter to chapter.
