Driving Mum

[Á ferð með mömmu] directed by Hilmar Oddsson, Iceland / Estonia 2022, 112'

Driving Mum is a dark comedy about growing up late and accompanying a loved one on their final journey. It is one-of-a-kind road movie!

Jón is a middle-aged man living with his mother in the Icelandic countryside. Over the years, the woman has completely dominated her son. When she suddenly dies, Jón is determined to fulfil her last will regarding her burial place.

His journey will become not only a form of farewell to his mother, but also an opportunity to reflect on their relationship and all the constraints he has faced over the years. It is also a chance for a fresh start, as Jón realises along the way that it is high time to start living his own life.

The experienced Icelandic director Hilmar Oddsson has nursed the idea of this film for thirty years. His story of late coming of age and accompanying the deceased on her last journey has been filtered through Scandinavian sensibility and dark humour, resulting in a film that is the perfect combination of dark comedy and road movie.
