Ten best films of 2017
“It appears that the critics from KINO magazine decided to once and for all solve the biggest question of last year’s Oscars – was the best movie of the year La La Land or Moonlight? In their ranking, they opted for the third movie from the list: Manchester by the Sea. Kenneth Lonergan’s film won by a large margin, which proves that the critics still appreciate “moral anxiety” in the cinema. It also appears that family dramas are also still highly valued, given that the action of the film which came in second – Romanian Sieranevada directed by Cristi Puiu – takes place in a family circle. On the other hand, Sieranevada is one of those movies that tend to be highly acclaimed, but not necessarily awarded at festivals. The whole ranking includes a mix of well-known, award-winning titles (Toni Erdmann, The Square, The Client) and films known only to a small circle of movie aficionados (Aquarius, The Death of Louis XIV, Cemetery of Splendour placed 14th). It is worth noting that although the list is dominated by US and European movies, several titles from other countries (Brazil, Iran, Thailand) also managed to find their way to the list, which speaks well of the repertoire of Polish cinemas.”
