Jinpa
[Zhuang Si Le Yi Zhi Yang], directed by Pema Tseden, China 2018, 86'
It’s hard to find a living soul in the colourless Tibetan Kekexili plateau, the highest and the largest in the world. Surely Jinpa, a truck driver who looks like an eternal hippie, is not expecting anyone on his way while he’s crossing the harsh landscape alone to the sounds of O Sole Mio, coming from a worn-out cassette tape. However, this hypnotic journey will be interrupted when he meets a taciturn walker who is crossing the wasteland driven by a desire for vengeance. Inspired by road films and westerns, full of melancholy but also subtle humour, Jinpa is a mystical meditation on human fate, life and death. The film won an award in the Orizzonti section of the Venice International Film Festival.
