A Gentle Creature
[Krotkaya], directed by Siergiej Łoźnica, France 2017, 143'
Russia as a hell – and though the film takes its title from the Dostoevsky short story of the same name, it is by no means an adaptation – was shot by one of the most famous Ukrainian artists Sergei Loznitsa. A woman with a calm yet riveting face is returned the letters she had sent to her husband, who is in prison. She hits the road to seek the truth about his fate. It turns out, however, that all the information she is trying to obtain is a "state secret." Finally, she decides to go alone to the imprisoned.
