Lamb
directed by Valdimar Jóhannsson, Iceland 2021, 106'
- The most original film of the year is a child of horror and a dark tale, born in a land where one cannot tell day from night, good from bad, and human from animal. Although stuck with one hoof in folk beliefs, this thrilling film tells a thoroughly contemporary story about the dark side of motherhood, grief and savagery that hides even in the calmest hearts.
- Lamb is set on a solitary sheep farm run by a silent couple, María and Ingvar. Their tranquil, work-filled life changes when an extraordinary creature is born in the pen. Due to strange events the sheep will cease to be silent and animal instinct will awaken in people. In the twilight of white nights, among the rugged, misty hills, the boundary between the civilized and the wild will blur. Together with the mysterious creature comes to life the question of whose mother nature really is.
