Nostalgia
[Nostalgia], directed by Mario Martone, Italy / France 2022, 117'
Felice Lasco (the magnetic Pierfrancesco Favino, star of Marc Bellocchio’s The Traitor) returns to his hometown after forty years to visit his ailing mother. Driven by guilt and longing, he doesn’t notice that the district of catacombs, cemeteries, shabby basements and tangled alleys drags him in like a swamp. Allied with a local priest, who is fighting against the Mafia, unreconciled to his own dark past, the man searches for an old friend in Sanità, forgetting that nostalgia can be a trap.
After twenty-seven years, Mario Martone returned to the Cannes competition with a film in which he continues the theme of a sentimental journey through the world of memories initiated in the 1995 film Nasty Love.
