Plan 75

[Plan 75], directed by Chie Hayakawa, Japan / Philippines / France / Qatar 2022, 112'

Japan is renowned for its advanced technology and excellent medical care, which result into a high life expectancy for its citizens. Combined with a low fertility rate, however, it is a wake-up call for the government. The ageing of the population portends an imminent economic crisis and an imbalance in the nation.

The solution is a government programme called Plan 75, which promotes euthanasia for people over the age of seventy-five. Ubiquitous advertisements, aimed at confused elderly citizens, praise the benefits of the revolutionary programme. One of the perks is supposed to be the remuneration that will allow the participants, balancing on the brink of poverty, to fulfil one last dream. An elderly woman whose assets are rapidly disappearing, a pragmatic programme salesman and a Filipino worker will thus face the most important choices.
