300 Miles to Heaven [300 mil do nieba]
directed by Maciej Dejczer, Poland 1989, 105′
1985. Two brothers, Jędrek and Grześ, live with their parents and numerous siblings in a caravan in very difficult conditions. Their father, a history teacher, has been dismissed twice for his political views. The boys decide to fulfil their dream of a better life and escape to the West, joined by their school friend Elka. However, only Jędrek and Grześ make it on the journey abroad, travelling under the chassis of a lorry.
Based on true events, Maciej Dejczer’s film is not only a valuable record of the reality of 1980s Poland and the growing yearning for freedom, but also a moving story about love, which induces to make the greatest sacrifices. The film captivates and moves thanks to young actors’ (Wojciech Klata and Rafał Zimowski) authenticity, the highly realistic script by Cezary Harasimowicz and Maciej Dejczer and Michał Lorenc’s unforgettable score.
