Happy as Lazzaro
[Lazzaro Felice], directed by Alice Rohrwacher, France/ Germany/ Switzerland/ Italy 2018, 125'
An oneiric story at the intersection of Italian neo-realism and magical realism. It revolves around a meeting between Lazzaro, a boy so kind-hearted that he is often thought to be a bit crazy, and the aesthete Tancredi, a young nobleman with an overly exuberant imagination. Their life—in the isolated Pastoral Village of Inviolata—is dictated by the dreadful Marquis Alfonsina de Luna, the queen of the tobacco empire and the mother of Tancredi.
