    • Stanley Kubrick famously called The Vanishing "the most terrifying film I have ever seen." George Sluizer’s ominous puzzle is a dark journey to the other side of morality and an intense portrait of a remorseless psychopath. Evoking both shivers of dread and stabs of anxiety, The Vanishing is a Dutch classic that feels like a cross between The Silence of the Lambs and Funny Games. Since its premiere, the film has insidiously crept into the subconscious of viewers, forcing them to answer one question: "Do you want to know the truth at any cost?"

  • It begins innocently enough—with a holiday road trip. A Dutch couple, Saskia (Johanna ter Steege) and Rex (Gene Bervoets), are driving through France. Along the way, they bicker, flirt, and practice their French vocabulary. At one point, they stop at a gas station. Saskia goes to the restroom—and vanishes. Her disappearance will haunt Rex for the rest of his life. We are also quickly introduced to the kidnapper: Raymond (a shattering performance by Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu), a mild-mannered chemistry teacher. Will Rex ever cross paths with the captor who has become his ultimate obsession?

    • A flawless adaptation of Tim Krabbé's novel The Golden Egg, this now-legendary film initially struggled to find a distributor, only to eventually inspire an American remake, also directed by Sluizer. The Vanishing is a waking nightmare—a narrative jigsaw puzzle with no safe exit, and a philosophical horror played out mostly in sun-drenched exteriors and bourgeois interiors. Alongside Rex, we pursue the unknown, tracking clues and searching for the solution to the mystery.
