Un simple accident
directed by Jafar Panahi, Francja/ Iran/ Luksemburg 2025, 105'
- Winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, nominated in major categories at the Golden Globes and the European Film Awards, and recognized with two Academy Award nominations, It Was Just an Accident, the latest film by Jafar Panahi, has already garnered nearly 40 awards and 110 nominations worldwide.
- This powerful film is a deeply humanistic reflection on trauma, forgiveness, and morality. Iranian director Jafar Panahi returns with a work that—like his previous films—delivers a bold critique of the authoritarian regime in his home country.
- The story begins with the titular accident. When their car breaks down on the way home, a married couple and their young daughter are forced to stop at a roadside garage. There they encounter two mechanics, one of whom offers assistance. The other is Vahid, observing everything from a distance.
- Vahid is a former political prisoner arrested during anti-government protests. The torture he endured during interrogation has left lasting damage, making every step he takes painfully difficult. In the unexpected visitor, Vahid believes he recognizes his former tormentor—a commissioner of the Iranian police known among prisoners as “Peg Leg.”
- In an act of revenge, he decides to abduct the man, hoping it will bring him a sense of relief. But before he can act, he must confront his own doubts—beginning with whether this is truly the right person, and ultimately whether revenge can ever serve as justice.
