Around Il deserto rosso
Meeting with Ewa Szponar, author of the book Factory of splendour and a screening of Michelangelo Antonioni’s Il deserto rosso
-
We would like to invite you to a meeting with Ewa Szponar, author of the book Fabryka splendoru [Factory of splendour] and a screening of Michelangelo Antonioni’s Il deserto rosso [Red Desert] on Sunday 11 December at 5 p.m. The meeting will be hosted by curator Aleksandra Jeglińska.
- Giuliana’s (Monica Vitti) green coat against the industrial landscape of Ravenna in the 1965 film critics’ reviews immediately gained cult status. One of them wrote: “Antonioni’s Il deserto rosso gives the impression as if the colours of steel and stone were being shown for the first time”. The Italian master’s first film made in colour, awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1964, has been considered an outstanding work of experimental cinema since the day of its premiere. Now we have the opportunity to rediscover it, thanks to a 4K restoration.
- The screening of the film will be accompanied by a discussion on the book Fabryka splendoru [Factory of splendour] by film expert and journalist Ewa Szponar, associated, among others, with the Warsaw Film School and the magazine Ekrany. Szponar’s reportage, like Il deserto rosso, escapes easy classification: both works deconstruct the myths about sunny Italy, unashamedly looking at what is considered ugly, unattractive and difficult.
- The event is co-financed by the Arthouse Cinemas Association.
