Young Mothers

[Jeunes mères], directed by Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne, Belgium/ France 2025, 105'
  • The action of the new film by the Dardenne brothers takes place in a care home for young mothers in Liège, Belgium. We meet five teenagersJulie, Jessica, Perla, Naïma, and Arianeforced to confront the hardships of early motherhood. Each of the girls, whose lives have been anything but easy, has a different story to tell.
    • Julie, who has struggled with addiction in the past, is trying to start over. Jessica and Perla cannot count on any support outside of the educators and staff at the center. The former was abandoned by her mother after birth and wishes to reconcile with her after all these years, while the latter struggles with indifference from both her sister and her partner. Naïma dreams of finally finding stability and security. Meanwhile, fifteen-year-old Ariane, wanting to finish school, is considering putting her child up for foster care against her own mother's wishes. The young protagonists struggle not only with the hardships of a daily life full of new responsibilities, but also with the past traumas they carry within themselves. The care home seems to be the only place where they feel understood and cared for.
  • Young Mothers is yet another story from the Belgian brothers, full of humanism and empathy, about those who usually do not have a voice. Raw realism blends here with a touch of hope tied to values such as solidarity and support. Based on observations from a real assistance center, the film depicts their struggle for a better future for themselves and their children.
