Meeting with Agnieszka Kalinowska
-
Agnieszka Kalinowska’s art operates on many levels of meaning – always thought-provoking, always engaged, but never at the expense of artistic expression.
- Join us on 8 October 2025 for the next event in the Na żywo series, a conversation with the artist whose practice resonates deeply with the challenges of our times.
- Kalinowska’s work acts as a sensitive barometer of the social phenomena that define contemporary life. For over two decades, she has consistently addressed themes of threat, uncertainty, violence, and insecurity. Her focus is always on the human being – through emotion and desire she reaches the structures of power, exposing the mechanisms that shape today’s political and social realities. Her artistic inquiry touches on issues such as the politics of borders and protection, or the rituals of authority that cultivate a false sense of safety – topics that feel particularly relevant in the present moment.
- A crucial aspect of Kalinowska’s work is the process itself. Her sculptural objects – intricate, labour-intensive constructions – are made from the simplest materials: grey paper, straw, string, clay. Her video works often emerge from social experiments, capturing gestures, expressions, and seemingly mundane utterances that reveal the subtle dynamics of human interaction.
- Agnieszka Kalinowska creates sculptures, video works, installations, and paintings. Her works have been exhibited internationally at venues such as MUMOK – Museum moderner Kunst (Vienna), Arizona State University Art Museum (Tempe), the 12th Gwangju Biennale (South Korea), the 19th Biennale of Sydney (Australia), the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum (Japan), Kunsthaus Graz (Austria), Palazzo delle Papesse Centro Arte Contemporanea(Siena), Sculpture Center (New York), the National Art Museum of China (Beijing), and Kunstraum Walcheturm(Zurich). In Poland, her works have been presented at the Museum of Art in Łódź, NOMUS in Gdańsk, Zachęta – National Gallery of Art, the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art, Łaźnia Centre for Contemporary Art, and BWA Gallery in Wrocław.
