Exhibition of artworks purchased in 2021 for the Collection of Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art

re/collections is an exhibition of artworks purchased in 2021 for the Collection of Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art with the support from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland. Among them are paintings, sculptures and drawings by Polish artists: Marek Chlanda, Jacek Dłużewski, Małgorzata Mirga-Tas, Ludwika Ogorzelec and Tomasz Tatarczyk, as well as the unique testimony to the one-off collaboration of conceptual artists, Joseph Kosuth, Emilia and Ilya Kabakov – an installation created for the 1994 exhibition The Corridor of Two Banalities presented at Ujazdowski Castle.

The Collection of Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art has been evolving since 1985. It was initiated alongside the institution’s first statute and exhibition programme and strongly reflects its aims and mission. The collection’s unique character and dynamic development in the last decade of the 20th and the first decade of the 21st century result from the direction and shape given to the institution by its then director, Wojciech Krukowski, who since 1997 has been acting as the curator of the Collection.

Currently, the Collection includes nearly 3,000 works by contemporary artists created in the second half of the 20th and in the 21st century. It contains objects representing all traditional and contemporary media: painting, installation, sculpture, photography, video, collage, as well as interactive and multimedia artworks. This year’s exhibition focuses in particular on areas of contemporary art that in the past few years have remained in the shadows, on the periphery of more experimental trends.
