No Dreams
Installation by Jerzy Kalina
- The installation No Dreams is a commemoration of the 160th anniversary of the outbreak of the January Uprising. This installation is another living pictogram, in which I try to engage in a dialogue with the past in the most personal form that is devoid of mundane façade. The space in the courtyard of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage has a symbolic meaning. The arrangement of black stools and the images of insurgents frozen in metal basins is a reflection of the individual and collective fate of the insurgents, and an extension of the black jewellery worn by the rebels. It is a symbol of a stopover along the lengthy road east.
- “No dreams” – the words uttered by Tsar Alexander II – were to deny Poles the hope of ever regaining independence.
