Kem
A séance marks an encounter with the unknown. It brings together the forces of light, sound and movement, in a flickering dance between presence and absence. Both the past and the future emerge from the darkness almost tangible, not yet fully realised (or perhaps already dissolving). Séance with Kem is an exploration of the political agency of the dancefloor, of costumes & camouflage, of resistance & mobilisation.
Kem is a queer-feminist initiative focused on choreography, performance and sound, at the interface with social and artistic practice. Dragana Bar constitues the nocturnal aspect of Kem’s practice – a club event, which presents the most exciting new phenomena in queer dance music and ephemeral performance.
In dialogue with the past of the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art – the institutional experiments of its former director, Wojciech Krukowski, the raves in the Cistern in the 1990s, and the history of Dragana Bar itself, which was born at the Ujazdowski Castle in 2018, Kem asks about the role of public cultural institutions in creating and sustaining community. How can we build a place for non-normative encounters with contemporary art? Is it possible to establish relations with the audience based on intimate exchange and affect?
As Kem, we want to reaffirm our dedication to dance as a way of manifesting a collective body of resistance. Dragana Bar is a queer party, materialised by and for the queer community. We will not tolerate any form of oppression, discrimination or abuse at our event. We reserve the right to refuse entry. There will be an awareness team, dedicated to ensuring that the house rules are upheld and everyone has a safe night. Kem remains firmly committed to supporting liberation and anti-imperial movements, including the ongoing struggles of Palestine, Lebanon and Ukraine against their genocidal oppressors.
