Singeli Movement: Greed for Speed – Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art

The documentary film Singeli Movement: Greed for Speed tells the story of the Singeli music community in Tanzania. The music genre known as Singeli is distinguished by its speed, the rhythm ranging from 200 to 300 beats per minute. It was born at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries in the slums of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city, at a time when the country was transforming from socialism to capitalism. Singeli combines music with dance, as well as with a narrative that, like rap, tells about everyday life and gives a voice to the excluded. The screening will be followed by a Singeli music concert by DJ Jay Mitta and vocalist MC Kadilida.

  • is an intermedia artist, filmmaker, DJ, curator, and art promoter. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, Oslo, and Malmö. Since 2018, he has been collaborating with the Ugandan record label Nyege Nyege Tapes, creating music videos and documentaries dedicated to new and traditional music.
