Project Room 2018

As part of this year’s {Project Room} programme at the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art we will see the latest works of six young artists selected amongst two hundred other candidates on the basis of their portfolios.

Each year over thirty experts – art curators, directors of institutions and professors of art schools submit applications of artists who, in their opinion, stand out with their artistic practice. The curators of Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art select the most promising new voices amongst the group. Since 2012 there have been over 70 exhibitions. Many among the authors who participated are now considered renown artists.

This year’s presentations programme will start with a work by Grzegorz Stefański, an artist who takes a closer look at body and its absence, monitors mini choreography of his characters and deconstructs the great works of the European cinema. During the exhibition at U–jazdowski Stefański will present his new video works.

Summer will be dedicated to works of Maria Toboła and Weronika Gęsicka. The first artist is a graduate of the University of Arts in Poznań and works mainly with performance and video, analysing the limits of embarrassment. Irony, wordplay and jests are omnipresent in her poetic sculpture works.

Weronika Gęsicka’s projects concern memory and its mechanisms. She is interested in scientific and pseudo-scientific theories on this subject, mnemonics and various types of disorders. Her area of practice is mainly photography.

In autumn we will examine new projects by Ania Nowak and Karolina Mełnicka. Nowak mainly deals with choreography. She creates solo and collective works which explore language gestures, understatements and body metamorphoses and makes an attempt to redefine sensuality.

Mełnicka is particularly interested in observation of methods of designing space and ideas for mass audience. She performs 3D animations, video art, art objects, photography, and performance.

The last presentation of the Project Room will be an exhibition by Karolina Babińska, an artist who studies the relation between art objects and the market through her installations.

All of the invited artist are granted the same budget and full production support from Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art. They will work closely with young curators who were invited to the project. The international jury will select two exhibitions amongst this year’s selection of solo projects and award them with the First Prize in the amount of PLN 20,000 and the Second Prize in the amount of PLN 10,000. The winners will be announced in January 2019.
