  1. The Jury aims to choose 2 candidates for a residency at Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art which will take place in Warsaw or remotely from 9 November till 9 December 2020.
  2. The candidates are being determined based on a review of applications sent to Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art until 28 September 2020 on opencall@u-jazdowski.pl with explicit interest to participate in the programme Smashing Wor(l)ds. Cultural Practices for re/Imagining & un/Learning Vocabularies, Residency #1, curated by Anna Ptak and Anna Czaban.
  3. The topic and rules of the residency has been explained in the announcement published on Ujazdowski’s website on 31 August 2020, and than re-published by partner organizations on their respective websites: https://u-jazdowski.pl/en/programme/residencies/open-calls/smashing-worlds
  4. The Jury consists of representatives of Partner and Associated Partners in Smashing Wor(l)ds project. These are professionals with background in artistic curation, community organising, artistic and linguistic research and artistic-institutional residencies and education. The Jury consists of: Anna Czaban, Witek Hebanowski, Marie-Reyne Iyumva, Marissa Lobo, Kathleen Louw, Mika Maruyama, Anna Ptak. It is observed by art students for transparency.
  5. The Jurors are requested to treat applications equitably, without prejudice, in accordance with the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Bring open-mindedness and generosity of spirit to their deliberations, provide fair and objective analysis, based on assessment criteria. are able to work collaboratively It is assumed that they are willing to express their views while respecting and listening to the views of others.
  6. The Jury’s aim is to advise the best candidates not in general qualifications, but best suited for a one month long residency in Warsaw, to be held in collaboration with curators Anna Ptak and Anna Czaban and leading to further developments in Warsaw programme of Smashing Wor(l)ds project: discourse and analysis of institutional artistic language and ways it deals with violence, both institutionally and beyond, training of staff, series of artistic interventions in the virtual space and communication media, podcasts, performative event on desired forms of art language that does not discriminate but supports emancipatory practices.
  7. The evaluation process consists of four stages resulting in creatingranking list consisting of: two top candidates for residency and four reserve candidates. The following procedures lead to this aim:
    • a. Collecting the applications sent to opencall@u-jazdowski.pl, checking their completeness and intelligibility, correspondence with senders to update the applications if necessary. Only the applications which are evidently incomplete 9 (i.e. have no statement of interest) are not accepted.
    • b. Preliminary review by curators, Anna Ptak and Anna Czaban, based on criteria and values listed below. 20 applications are selected for further assessment. However all applications are listed and available for cross-checking for other members of Jury.
    • c. The Jury members evaluate the applications on their own using the criteria and values provided. Assessors are required to pre-score the applications before the meeting - mark 3 tops candidates assigning points as follows: 3 - best; 2 - 2nd best; 1 - last. Based on the scores the ranking list is prepared. The charts and the scores are sent to Ujazdowski, on opencall@u-jazdowski.pl on Tuesday 6/10/2020 11 am. The ranking list itself is NOT the final list of accepted and reserve candidates.
    • d. The Jury members meet on Tuesday 6/10/2020 1 pm, online. The ranking list is presented and discussed according to following schedule:
      • i. 1:00 - 1:30 pm: each Jury member presents the strengths of 1 top candidate from their list. If the candidate was already presented by somebody else, than the 2nd best candidate is presented
      • ii. 1:30 - 2:15 pm: discussion on 6 top candidates to create final ranking list. This does not have to mirror the initial ranking list, as during the discussion relevant opinions might be revealed. This will be registered in a protocol.
  8. The ranking list will be published on Ujazdowski websites and the candidates will be contacted and invited via e-mail. If within two days the top candidates decline taking part in the residency, than the next ones from the ranking list will be invited.

    • We understand that there are no universal indicators of quality of artistic practice. Jurors will evaluate both the artistic design (or research, curatorial skills) and the themes, following and respecting also the applicants indications of their knowledge background.
    • – correspondence between the situatedness of artistic practice and clarity of the theme expressed in description (whatever form) and understood from the portfolio / links;
    • – interesting artistic positions, presenting nonobvious and individual voice on the theme. the issues of non-hegemonic knowledges embedded in practice without exploiting the theme as “diversity”
    • – good correspondence between media chosen, and the theme.

  • Digital Commission / Podcast potential

  • Smashing Wor(l)ds relevance
    • The work proposes interesting way to understand new, revolutionary languages of democratic realm or analysis of existing ones to raise discussion on the topic via Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art and Other Space Foundation, open to research in Polish context. The work and project proposal presents qualities that supports and makes relevant the languages of non-privileged social practice, without parasitising on trendy identity politics and “capital” of vulnerable subjects. The work and project counters devaluation of migrant, people of color, queer, social situatedness of knowledge and their structural and systematic discrimination. Media and social media interventions.

    • Residency relevance is interest and ability to collaborate, understanding how to open the process of art making and research to Warsaw based collaborators, creating learning possibilities for institutional staff and audience. The candidate is interested in including research in Poland to their work, albeit the work bears significance for Polish context.
