Talk with Gridthiya Gaweewong, artistic director of the Jim Thompson Art Center in Bangkok
within the frames of Curating Institution series
This time, the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art will have the privilege to guest Gridthiya Gaweewong, artistic director of the Jim Thompson Art Center in Bangkok. The meeting will take place within the frames of the Curating Institution series.
What does it mean to run a contemporary art institution in the local cultural context of Bangkok? During the meeting at U–jazdowski, Gridthiya Gaweewong will talk about the obligations that global art institutions have towards local communities in a city of millions.
Gaweewong is and has been the curator of many events and exhibitions – including Under Construction, shown from 2000 to 2002 in Tokyo, Politics of Fun presented in 2005 at Berlin's Haus der Kulturen der Welt, as well as the co-curated with Rirkrit Tiravanija in 2006, Saigon Open City. She was also the curator of the Bangkok Experimental Film Festival for a decade, and recently, a member of the curatorial team of the 12th Gwangju Biennale in South Korea.
The project Curating Institution is a programme based on talks, lectures, or seminars. Both curators as well as directors of valued contemporary art institutions from around the world have been invited to participate, which in various ways face what critical art or its engagement mean in view of a dynamically changing reality.
The meeting with Gridthiya Gaweewong is co-organised by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute.
