Lene Berg

Darwin in Warsaw

Edited by Ika Sienkiewicz-Nowacka

This publication was made on the occasion of Lene Berg's residency stay at the Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art in the spring of 2005.

When an image of a man with a white beard appeared on the facade of the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw one evening in autumn 2005, many people were very surprised. Most recognized his voice, but many did not recognize his face. Could it be Karl Marx? Or maybe God? Or Santa Claus? Only a few noticed right away that the image was of Charles Darwin, but what was he doing there? And why was he humming "What A Wonderful World"? And why at the Palace of Culture and Science? And why now, on an ordinary day, a Thursday in October? The intention of this book is not to answer all these and many other questions, but this book undoubtedly has a lot in common with the man whose image is on the facade of the Palace of Culture and Science.
