Rooted Design for Routed Living

Edited by Marianna Dobkowska, Kaja Pawełek

The book sums up a two-year project Rooted Design for Routed Living: Alternative Design Strategies, which included international workshops attended by designers from Poland and Norway which led to creation of functional objects which are now being used by the residents at NKD and Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art.

A visual essay by photographer Nicolas Grospierre opens this publication and serves as introduction to the project. This book documents the functional prototypes ceated as an outcome of a two-year-long project. A text by Markus Degerman and his interview with the project's leaders Tomek Rygalik and Oscare Narud, explain the idea of 'rooted design', which in the case of this project, was tailored to the needs of studios used by artist-in-residence living a 'routed living', insofar that it is often spent in places that are but temporary homes. Providing an additional background for the project are conversations with resident artists about the studio's role in their work and daily life, as well as Katy Siegel's essay Live/Work about the changing status and meanings of the studio.
