Silvia Kolbowski An Inadequate History of Conceptual Art
A publication accompanying Silvia Kolbowski's artistic project. In 1998, Silvia Kolbowski invited sixty American artists to participate in the project and adhere to a set of guidelines (including a description of a conceptual work not of their own authorship and a definition of conceptual art). She asked interviewees to speak exclusively from memory, conduct no research, and disclose neither their identities nor the identities of the artists or titles of the works they referenced. They were allowed to name dates and locations. Forty artists agreed to provide such accounts, and Kolbowski ultimately tape-recorded twenty-two of them. While the artists spoke, she videotaped their hand gestures.
The project involved: Vito Acconci, Dennis Adams, Mac Adams, Connie Beckley, Dara Birnbaum, Mel Bochner, Hans Haacke, Eileen Hickey-Hulme, Mary Kelly, Joyce Kozloff, Louise Lawler, Les Levine, Jonas Mekas, Alan McCollum, Howardena Pindell, Lucio Pozzi, Yvonne Rainer, Dorothea Rockburne, Al Ruppersberg, Carolee Schneeman, Lawrence Weiner, James Welling.
