My Father Is My Mother’s Brother
directed by Vadym Ilkov, Ukraine 2018, 76' (English friendly)
- Tolik is an avant-garde artist and musician in Kyiv’s underground queer scene. He is also the foster father of little Katya, his sister Anya’s daughter. Mental illness prevents Anya from taking care of Katya on a daily basis. An award winner for innovation at the Visions du Réel Festival, Vadym Ilkov’s film combines, with a melodious flow, moments of extreme loneliness and familial intimacy, emptiness and creative concentration, and the great weight and everyday joy of life. A bold but also subtle, respectful portrait of an extraordinary family that, with authenticity, corresponds with the personal and artistic honesty of its protagonists.
