- In Alcarràs, awarded with the Golden Bear at the Berlinale, the director returns to motifs already present in the memorable Summer 1993. The story, telling the glories and shadows of the everyday life of farmers in the eponymous village, has an autobiographical honesty, warmth and a discreet sense of humour. By placing children as protagonists, the seemingly trivial and plain takes on entirely new meanings and colours. This world is recreated so meticulously that it allows the viewers a highly sensory reception, from the scorching heat of the sun-soaked fields to the taste of the ripe figs and peaches grown by the farmers. A celebration of the surprisingly realistic everyday life is mixed with poignant social commentary. The incursion of modernity irrevocably shatters the tranquillity of the provincial world, forcing the characters to make a difficult choice between pragmatism and idealism. What the big world sees as another step towards technological progress, for some will prove to be the beginning of the inevitable end.
