Nobody's Hero
[Viens, je t'emmène], directed by Alain Guiraudie, France 2022, 100'
- The new film from the director of the acclaimed Stranger by the Lake is a funny, ironic but also intriguingly ambiguous portrait of today’s France and its inhabitants. Creating a genuine gallery of extravagant characters, Alain Guiraudie tells the story of surprising affection, the pursuit of erotic fulfilment and a society in turmoil, which – in the face of growing distrust and insecurity – gradually succumbs to collective paranoia.
- Thirty-five-year-old Médéric falls head over heels in love with a sex worker named Isadora. This feeling is not only thwarted by the woman’s jealous husband, but also by a terrorist attack that disrupts the tranquillity of the sleepy French town of Clermond-Ferrand.
- Panic grips the town, the search for the perpetrators continues and anyone with a dark complexion is considered a potential attacker. Among the suspects is Sélim, a homeless young man of Arab origin. Médéric gives him shelter from the winter cold, allowing him into the stairwell of the tenement where he lives. However, his willingness to help is mixed with suspicions about Sélim’s true intentions. The risk of a serious conflict, a love frenzy and a growing sense of danger irrevocably change Médéric’s settled life.
