God Exists, Her Name Is Petrunija
[Gospod postoi, imeto i' e Petrunija], directed by Teona Strugar Mitevska, Belgium/ Croatia/ France/ Macedonia/ Slovenia 2019, 100'
The action takes place in a small town in Eastern Macedonia. Every year in January, the local priest throws a wooden cross into the river, after which hundreds of men jump into the water. Whoever manages to fish it out, can count on luck and prosperity. That’s how it was, until the cross was fetched by Petrunija. In the local community, shock is mixed with rage – how is it possible that a woman had the audacity to take part in a male ritual?! A scandal breaks out because Petrunija has no intentions of stepping aside.
