A Fantastic Woman
[Una mujer fantástica], directed by Sebastián Lelio, Spain/Germany/USA/Chile 2017, 104' (English friendly)
Marina is a fantastic woman: she doesn’t let anyone put her in any pattern and uncompromisingly goes against the current.
Sebastián Lelio (author of La Sagrada familia, El Año del tigre and Gloria) created a heroine who, on her own - and with immaculate make-up - squares up to prejudice. The director of A Fantastic Woman displayed intuition by casting a debutante in the main role: on screen, enchanting Daniela Vega combines sensuality with strength, and sensitivity with obstinacy.
A Fantastic Woman was a major event of this year’s Berlinale, where the Chilean director was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay and Teddy Award for the best LGBTQ themed film. The movie has also won the Oscar 2018 in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
