First intervention Three Underground Spaces

Erik Smith's exhibition project
  •
    • We invite you to the first intervention of Erik Smith’s exhibition project Three Underground Spaces. The intervention will take place in an underground cistern discovered in front of the entrance to the Castle. This nineteenth-century remnant of the former water infrastructure was adapted for the needs of the art institution by Tadashi Kawamata in his 2003 work Reconstruction. Smith highlights the ambiguity that still pervades this place by dismantling part of the floor a gesture extended through a sound installation that both doubles and disrupts the continuity of the cistern’s soundscape. The installation comprises various recordings of the earth, including its electromagnetic activity, captured by electrodes installed in the ground. It underscores one of the recurring themes of the artist’s intervention the ambivalence between what is accessible and what remains inaccessible.
  • Erik Smith is an artist with a background in comparative literature and visual arts, currently living and working in Berlin. His site-specific projects and other works have been presented at ALL, Palermo (2024); University of Porto, Academy of Fine Arts, Porto (2023); Galerie Stadtpark, Krems (2021); de Appel Centre for Contemporary Art, Amsterdam (2016); Skulpturenpark Berlin_Zentrum, Berlin (2012); and Sculpture Center, New York (2008). His first monograph, Substrata, was co-published in 2024 by permanent Verlag, Berlin, U. Portoi2ADS, Porto, and Counterpath, Denver/New York, with the support of Stiftung Kunstfonds Bonn.

  • On the opening day, 19/10/2025, at 7:00 PM
    • In the underground cistern, in front of the main entrance to the building, Susana Santos Silva will present her personal variation on the relationship between trumpet music and the earth. Her instrument has held a special place in the history of music, due in part to its frequent presence in rituals, ceremonies, and even secular celebrations that connect people with the soil.
  • Susana Santos Silva is a Portuguese trumpeter, improviser, composer and performer based in Stockholm, Sweden renowned for her innovative approach to music. One of the most exciting improvisers in the world (Downbeat), Susana has a singular artistic approach that comes out of a comprehensive spectrum of influences. She draws inspiration and works with other artistic expressions like image and body movement. She is interested in expanding the sonic possibilities of her instrument, and creatively exploring the dissolution of boundaries of perception, genre and media. Whether performing solo, leading her own ensembles, or collaborating with other artists, Santos Silva’s music often transcends conventional boundaries, inviting listeners into new sonic territories.
