Santo and Blue Demon Against the Monsters
[Santo el enmascarado de plata y Blue Demon contra los monstruos], directed by Gilberto Martínez Solares, Mexico 1970, 85'
- The movies about the adventures of Santo – a superhero in a silver mask – are a phenomenon in the world of movies better known as trash movies. However, in the case of Santo, it’s not about the low budget, tacky special effects, or poor script; but what makes the film really stand out, is Santo himself – a legendary man who, unlike many other superheroes, really existed. Movies about Santo combine everything that Mexico has to offer: macho culture and the violence of lucha libre, specifically fervent religiosity and naive faith in the victory of good, as well as exaggerated contrasts and colors. In this movie, one of many, whose hero is a famous wrestler, Santo helps Blue Demon fight the monsters inhabiting a castle – the Wolfman, Dracula, and many others.
