Klondike

directed by Maryna Er Gorbach, Ukraine / Turkey 2022, 100'

  • Donbas, 2014. The beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. A terrifying, poignant portrait of human desperation, as well as faith in the power of the law and hope for a better tomorrow. We follow a couple expecting a child whose world has literally come crashing down on their heads. In the middle of the night, a piece of a shot down plane demolishes the wall of Irka and Tolik’s house. But instead of fleeing the country like their closest neighbours, they decide to stay and survive in increasingly difficult conditions. Even when Russian soldiers come knocking on the door.
    • Awarded at Sundance and in Berlin, this gripping film affects the viewer even more strongly in the present day, opening their eyes to what is happening internationally and raising awareness of the tragic consequences of war on the individual fates of ordinary people.
