Honeyland
directed by Tamara Kotevska, Ljubomir Stefanov, Macedonia 2019, 87'
Hatidze, 50, lives with her sick mother in a deserted Macedonian village with no access to electricity or running water. She is the last independent female beekeeper in Europe who sells honey in small batches. She lives traditionally, in harmony with nature. One day a large nomadic family settles nearby. They also start to keep bees, but treat the animals differently. Respect is replaced by soulless business and maximum exploitation. Will Hatidze manage to change their approach? This beautifully filmed tale gives a glimmer of hope for a change in man’s commercial attitude toward bees and nature.
