Little Joe
directed by Jessica Hausner, Austria 2019, 105' (English friendly)
A young scientist is working on genetically modified plants that are supposed to make people happy. When, against the rules, she takes one of them home – as a gift for her son, whom she is raising alone – things take an unexpected turn. Jessica Hausner's film is a beautifully filmed artistic variation of the Little Shop of Horrors and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the kind these films deserved in the era of discussions about the Anthropocene and the agency of non-human protagonists.
