Sunless
[Sans soleil] directed by Chris Marker, 1982, 100'
Chris Marker’s most well-known film essay, wherein we find that which is most important in his work. A meditative, poetic travelogue that touches on important political issues. Here, Japan and Africa are the "extremes of survival." Sans soleil is a philosophical film and, at that, heavily immersed in the history of cinema – referring to Hitchcock’s Vertigo as well as to his own La Jetée.
