Love
Love, by Norwegian director Dag Johan Haugerud, is the second installment of his cinematic trilogy, which concludes with Dreams (Sex Love) — the film that won the Golden Bear at this year’s Berlinale.
The film explores emotions in the digital age, where making any kind of commitment no longer seems obvious. Haugerud reflects not only on the challenges of human communication but also on the expectations we place on ourselves today.
Marianne, a doctor in her forties (played by Norwegian cinema star Andrea Bræin Hovig), much like Tor (Tayo Cittadella Jacobsen), a nurse by profession, feels far more comfortable in her professional life than in her private one. Defying social norms, both seek intimacy beyond the boundaries of conventional relationships. One evening, Marianne and Tor unexpectedly meet on a ferry. On her way home, Marianne soon realizes that for Tor, these “cruises” around Oslo are part of a frequent nightly routine. The men he meets through dating apps offer him fleeting connections and moments of spontaneous intimacy. Intrigued by his perspective, Marianne begins to wonder whether such a form of relationship could also be an option for her.
