Fiddler on the Roof

Od–jazd Film Club meeting

  • Fiddler on the Roof
    • directed by Norman Jewison, USA 1971, 180’
    •
  • For the festive finale of the first edition of the {OD-JAZD} Film Club, we invite you to one of the most famous, charming and moving musicals in the history of cinema.
    • Poor milkman Tevye lives in Anatevka, a Ukrainian village somewhere on the outskirts of the Russian empire. The Jewish community has been here for years, living alongside the Orthodox Ruthenians, whom they try not to get in the way. God has given Tevye five daughters, who according to tradition must be married off with the help of a matchmaker. But instead of abiding by centuries-old customs, the daughters prefer to follow their hearts, confronting their father with serious dilemmas. At the same time, it turns out that the upcoming changes will affect not only Tevye’s family, but also the entire community of Anatevka…
  • Fiddler on the Roof is an Oscar-winning cult film adaptation of the popular Broadway musical, which was the first to exceed 3,000 performances in nearly 10 years on stage. Jerry Bock’s music and Joseph Stein’s libretto are a unique combination of traditional Jewish sounds and musical aesthetics, and the memorable roles played by Chaim Topol in the leading role make us fall in love with the characters and their world. They are portrayed with tenderness as people full of passion and joy despite the inevitable passing of time and the sinister decisions of the Russian empire. Comedy meets tragedy, trivial matters clash with serious ones, and timeless songs evoke both energy and zest for life, as well as nostalgia for what belongs to the past.
    • What is an integrated musical?
  • How are film stories told through songs?
    • Why did Fiddler on the Roof win the hearts of audiences all over the world?
  • We will try to answer these and many other questions together with our club’s expert Patrycja Mucha-Smolińska. We invite you to the screening and discussion, during which you will be able to ask questions and share your ideas on how to interpret the film. What do you think Fiddler on the Roof is about? We want to hear your opinion!
