Kurt (Joe Keery, known from Stranger Things) has been dreaming for years about becoming a popular influencer – without success. In yet another attempt to achieve his dream, he becomes a taxi driver in the Spree app. When his videos don’t get the expected attention, he starts killing his passengers and broadcasting the murders live on the internet.
Spree is a scathing satire on social media, co-produced by Drake and taking place entirely on smartphone screens and GoPro cameras. Black humour and the grotesque mix with social reflection, and events quickly take an unexpected turn. The story is formally intriguing, perfectly matching the poetics of the modern internet, which makes Spree look like a unique screen adaptation of GTA with references to American Psycho and results in a very peculiar experience. What we see on the screen is terrifying, but also impossible to look away from.
