Synonyms
[Synonymes], directed by Nadav Lapid, France/ Israel/ Germany 2018, 123'
Winner of the Golden Bear and the FIPRESCI Prize of the last Berlin festival. Yoav, wanting to cut himself off from his past, decides to go to Paris. His beginnings in this new city, however, are far from what he imagined. The easiest way to forget your homeland is to stop using your native language. Hence, Yoav doesn't speak a word of Hebrew – he meets the French capital with a dictionary in his hand. A young French couple – whom the protagonist quickly befriends – helps him discover a new identity. Based on his own experience, Nadav Lapid wonders if it is possible to deal with the past yet be born again at the same time. Synonyms is an engaging film, with each scene becoming a more and more original tragicomic puzzle.
