Szkoda, że nareszcie
Jacek “Budyń” Szymkiewicz is a remarkable figure in Polish music — a versatile and immensely talented founder of bands such as Pogodno and Babu Król. In Sebastian Juszczyk’s film, his friends — including Katarzyna Nosowska, Krzysztof Zalewski, Stanisław Soyka, and many others — bring us closer to his paradoxical personality. It’s a story about a rebellious artist, his difficult relationships, mental health struggles, addictions, and creative defiance against the backdrop of the social transformations of the 1990s. Music became his way of life, a form of therapy and self-creation — but what was the cost? Unique interviews and archival materials intertwine with animations and collages, immersing us in Budyń’s complex world, which captivated audiences at this year’s Millennium Docs Against Gravity festival.
