      • Uncensored: Art and Culture During Times of Oppression – Belarus

        • The phenomenon of independent and underground culture during late communism in Poland and Czechoslovakia was not only of artistic, but also of socio-political, importance and has significantly influenced how we view the role of culture in society and the meaning of freedom. The struggle waged several decades ago by artists in our two countries is today being waged by artists in Belarus. Censorship and threats of imprisonment or exile are a part of everyday reality for all who yearn to preserve their spiritual and artistic independence. How can one make art under such circumstances? What is the role of art and culture during times of oppression? Joining the discussion are culturologist Yaraslava Ananka and composer Galina Kazimirovskaya, choirmaster of the CONCORDIA choir. With moderator Jáchym Topol.

      • Uncensored / Censorship Today
        • We live in a society that considers freedom of speech and freedom of artistic expression to be basic human rights. But there are growing doubts as to the real extent of our freedom of expression. What are the greatest threats to freedom of speech today? Political correctness? The algorithms of social networks? Grant mechanisms in culture?
