Szymon Szewczyk

The familiar is to be found at the end of the world

Szymon Szewczyk

(b. 1989) graduated from the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice. The artist creates paintings, collages, installations, videos as well as objects. He also works with set design and graphic design. The exhibition inside the {Bank Pekao Project Room} presents the artist’s diploma work, defended in June of 2014 in the studio of Andrzej Tobis. Szewczyk’s work is the result of his theoretical and practical research of obscure links between seemingly distant phenomena. His interests include, on the one hand, that which is tame and familiar, like the stylistics of Polish allotments, on the other, the iconography and symbolism of cult and ritual objects coming from distant cultures. By creating collage objects with the use of cheap and common materials, such as plaster or self-adhesive veneer, Szewczyk juggles with associations and grants new meanings to compiled forms.
