Zhanna Kadyrova
Asphalt
Zhanna Kadyrova works in numerous media: video, installation, action as well as painting, drawing and sculpture. The city is a frequent theme of her practice. Kadyrova rediscovers usually unnoticed elements of public space, redefining their usefulness and, at the same time, drawing our attention to how architecture determines the way we move around the city. The project on display, Asphalt (2011–2012), is a series of minimalistic objects, fragments of tarmac excised from the streets of Kiev, undergoing mass-scale renovation ahead of the Euro 2012 football cup. Kadyrova elevates a prosaic, ignored fragment of the urban tissue to the rank of art. Arranged in gallery space, the black slabs of asphalt make one think of the art of the 1960s. The exhibition has been curated by Marianna Dobkowska.
Exhibition of Zhanna Kadyrova is presented in the framework of the project Transfer: Polish-Ukrainian Exchange 2012 in cooperation with the Pinchuk Art Center in Kiev.
